Enterprise Ireland Brings Economic Development, Jobs to Emerald Isle

Ireland is a great place to do business. And Enterprise Ireland helps ensure it is a profitable business experience.

Enterprise Ireland (News - Alert) is the government’s lead agency responsible for the development and promotion of the indigenous business sector.

It accelerates the development of world-class Irish companies to achieve strong positions in global markets – using a network of Irish and international offices.

“We have an international story to tell,” Enterprise Ireland Senior Vice President David Smith (News - Alert) told TMCnet in a recent interview.

For example, in conjunction with the recent visit to New York by the Irish head of government, Brian Cowen, Enterprise Ireland announced new U.S. deals for Irish companies totaling U.S. $7 million. Among the contracts were:

Accuris Networks (News - Alert), an Ireland-based roaming interworking and device management technology company, which agreed to contracts with a combined value of $2.7 million with three leading U.S. wireless services providers.

Bord na Mona Environmental Products U.S. Inc., a provider of water reuse, wastewater and odor-control treatment technologies, and the U.S. subsidiary of Ireland-based Bord na Mona announced a partnership agreement with All Tech Environmental. The agreement provides for the supply of proprietary technologies that will be used to treat wastewater in commercial and residential development markets that require nitrogen and phosphorous removal to high-performance permit levels, water reuse, and high-strength waste applications.

Ireland-based Airtel (News - Alert) ATN, a supplier of aeronautical telecommunications network software to the global aerospace industry, will provide data link software, avionics test equipment and development services to several U.S.-based companies and research organizations involved in the design and implementation of the Federal Aviation Administration’s NextGen (News - Alert) Air Transportation System program. Airtel ATN expects the contracts to result in revenue of approximately $1 million in 2010. The company is already involved in providing similar products and services to the European Union’s EuroControl Link 2000+ program.

The high technology field has already led to new many jobs in Ireland in research & development, sales force, back office and head office sectors, according to Smith.

“It’s definitely leading to employment,” Smith said.

In fact, Enterprise Ireland client companies are expected to create 60,000 jobs by the end of 2015.

Enterprise Ireland client companies are currently responsible for over 250,000 jobs.

Looking back at 2009, many companies in Ireland maintained their existing export business while a number of sectors recorded growth in total export sales – including software, internationally traded services and life sciences.

In 2009, Enterprise Ireland also made seed capital investments in 73 new high-potential start-up companies which together will create over 900 new jobs.

Frank Ryan, chief executive officer of Enterprise Ireland, said the agency’s client companies have overcome difficult challenges in the past 18 months, and often have come through stronger.

"In 2009 we focused on building business stability. 2010 is about building for growth and global success. Enterprise Ireland is driving and supporting a high level of activity across key business areas – developing new markets, growing more entrepreneur-led businesses, co-financing company R&D, driving the commercialization of third level research for the benefit of industry. Resources and efforts in these key areas are being intensified to support our clients in every way possible to ensure they capitalize on the global recovery."
