Groupon Chooses Vertica for Real-Time Analytics

Deal-of-the-day site Groupon has chosen a solution from real-time analytics provider Vertica Systems to analyze data to attribute revenue and other performance metrics to individual consumers. Vertica was reportedly chosen by Groupon from a dozen others bidders, reported Direct Marketing News.

Vertica's real-time analytics solution loads and queries data in real time, allowing for faster access to business-critical information. Queries and loading happen in parallel, and once loaded, data are always moved in a compressed format, which helps minimize the time required to perform all data operations. With real-time analytics, users such as Groupon can run more queries and gather business intelligence faster, putting that intelligence to use to improve processes.

Mark Johnson, chief data officer at Groupon, said that his company has already “seen results that are now in the hands of decision-makers within the company” since beginning to use the Vertica analytics service in December. Johnson declined to name the other companies that participated in the search process.

“We went with Vertica for a list of reasons,” said Johnson. “Most notably it has strong word-of-mouth among people I've worked with in Silicon Valley and it is tremendously easy to use.”

The companies also said in a statement that Groupon selected Vertica for its Amazon Elastic Cloud Computing offering, among other reasons.

“Groupon chose Vertica because of price-performance and scale,” said Christopher Lynch, president and CEO of Vertica. Because the solution is quick to load and query and has the ability to store large amounts of data in a small footprint, said Vertica, it can handle even the largest data sets and toughest queries, from gigabytes to petabytes of data —and with concurrency for multiple users with ease.

As reported by TMCnet, Groupon had to step up to the Japanese public recently to apologize for one of its retail participants, Bird Café.
