Kuwait central bank chief resigns

KUWAIT CITY (AP) — The head of Kuwait's central bank for more than 25 years has resigned.

The official Kuwait News Agency says Sheik Salem Abdulaziz Al Sabah, a member of the Gulf nation's ruling family, is stepping down. He had been governor of the central bank since 1986.

Monday's announcement gave no immediate reason for his resignation. But he has been linked by opposition lawmakers to a corruption scandal that alleged officials received government payoffs.

No formal charges have been made from the accusations, but it was part of political tensions that led to elections earlier this month.

The new parliament is dominated by opposition groups that include hard–line Islamists.
