PrismTech Contributes Data Distribution Service Expertise to Duke Energy Coalition of the Willing Interoperability Demo at Distributech 2016

PrismTech™, a global leader in software platforms for distributed systems, will be contributing its Data Distribution Service (DDS) expertise to the Duke Energy (News - Alert) Coalition of the Willing (COW-II) interoperability demonstration at Distributech 2016 in Orlando, FL.

Duke Energy is committed to distributed intelligence and establishing a grid that is simpler and more cost-effective to operate. To demonstrate the value of the Open Field Message Bus (OpenFMB™) device interoperability framework, Duke Energy partnered with 25 vendors including PrismTech to form the COW-II to implement and test a microgrid solution in Mount Holly, NC. This partnership has led to the development of a field device interoperability framework known as the Open Field Message Bus (OpenFMB). OpenFMB is a standards-based solution designed to reduce implementation complexity and integration costs and was formally adopted by two task forces within the Smart Grid Interoperability Panel (SGIP) and the North American Energy Standards Board (NAESB), along with others.

The COW-II initiative not only demonstrates plug-and-play integration of innovative solutions from 25 vendors, but it has also showcased low-latency microgrid optimization use cases using a variety of wired and wireless communications technologies. These use cases leverage open Internet of Things (IoT), publish-subscribe (pub/sub) protocols and industry-standard data modeling structures based on the International Electrotechnical Commission's (IEC (News - Alert)) Common Information Model (CIM). The results from COW-II demonstrate an alternative to delivering enhanced microgrid operations can be achieved using the OpenFMB pub/sub architecture to quickly federate data between grid-edge nodes in a scalable and resilient fashion. Duke Energy's COW-II Mount Holly microgrid test bed exhibits a diverse set of technologies that communicate using DDS or message queue telemetry transport (MQTT) or advanced message queue protocol (AMQP) open IoT pub/sub protocols.

PrismTech is a leading provider of commercial and open source DDS solutions with its ortex™ Intelligent Data Sharing Platform. As part of the COW-II demo Vortex will be used to enable interoperability and optimized management of distributed smart grid field devices in both islanded and grid connected modes of operation. In islanded mode of operation the smart grid devices will provide localized power distribution to customers. This is in contrast to the grid connected mode of operation where devices simply become another power plant on the grid and distribution to customers is managed by the utility.

Vortex is compliant with the OMG™'s Data Distribution Service for Real-time Systems open standard and builds on proven technologies to provide an efficient solution for device-to-device, device-to-cloud and cloud-to-cloud Internet scale real-time data sharing. It is a crucial enabler for systems that have to reliably and securely deliver high volumes of data with stringent end-to-end qualities-of-service (QoS) and has been designed to optimally address the real-time information distribution and management challenges posed by the next generation of smart grid applications.

"COW-II represents the most innovative and sustained effort to date to showcase the benefits of data and device interoperability in a smart grid use case. The touted benefits of the Industrial IoT are a step closer to reality because of Duke Energy's leadership and PrismTech's commitment to grid modernization initiatives," said Spiros Motsenigos, VP Sales, PrismTech.
