William Blair to Be Lead Sponsor of UNC Kenan-Flagler's 10th Annual "Alpha Challenge"

CHICAGO --(Business Wire)--

William Blair announced today that it will be the lead sponsor for The University of North Carolina Kenan-Flagler Business School's "Alpha Challenge," one of the premier graduate business school investment management competitions.

UNC Kenan-Flagler will host MBA students from 16 leading business schools on November 20 and 21, 2014, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, as they compete for the top spot. Other sponsors include Carlson Capital, Chilton Investment Partners, Fidelity Investments, T. Rowe Price, UBS Global, Yacktman Asset Management, American Century Investments, Capital Group, FactSet (News - Alert), Harris Associates, Manning & Napier, Principal Global Investors, Sirios Capital Management, and WEDGE Capital Management.

The Alpha Challenge pits MBA teams against each another as they present one long and one short investment recommendation from a predefined universe of stocks. They defend their analysis in front of a panel of distinguished judges who are all buy-side professionals, including institutional portfolio managers, hedge fund managers, and equity research analysts.

The event will be attended by a total of 30 buy-side firms and 48 of the top MBA students inthe country focused on gaining entry to the investment management industry. These students compete on their home campuses for the opportunity to represent their school, and once selected, submit a one-page stock idea along with their resumes. The attending firms then use these items to decide on interview candidates.

The two-day event will begin with firms interviewing candidates on Thursday, followed by an evening of networking. The competition will take place on Friday. Lunch on Friday will feature a keynote address from Robert Lanphier, a partner and portfolio manager at William Blair.

"Ten years ago, we started the Alpha Challenge as a way for MBA students to display their knowledge and investing acumen to buy-side professionals," said Jim Jones, research analyst at William Blair and co-founder of the event. "It's been a pleasure to watch it evolve towards becoming both ground-zero for buy-side firms' MBA recruiting, and into a fun and intellectually rigorous experience for all involved."

Last year, the University of Chicago Booth School of Business won first place. The Yale School of Management and the University of Virginia Darden School of Business finished second and third, respectively.
