Fireman's Fund Insurance Company Gives Fairbanks Fire Department $5,000 Grant

FAIRBANKS, Alaska --(Business Wire)--

With the increase in cost of fuel and sub-zero temperatures during winter, heat by any means is often a priority. Folks seal up their homes to save energy and the tighter the home, the more likely it is to experience a carbon monoxide (CO) related problem, thus increasing the need for early warning by a CO detector.

Fireman's Fund Insurance Company and Alaska USA Insurance Brokers are partnering to award a $5,041 grant to the Fairbanks Fire Department for the purchase, installation and education of combination smoke and carbon monoxide detectors into high risk population residences.

Carbon monoxide is an odorless, tasteless and colorless gas that can have deadly consequences. Diagnosing carbon monoxide poisoning is difficult, as the symptoms of low-level exposures mimic common medical conditions such as flu. Gas-powered appliances including furnaces and hot water heaters generate carbon monoxide, so faulty venting or other undetected malfunction can let the gas escape into homes and businesses unnoticed.

"Successful management of a disaster depends greatly upon upfront planning and preparedness of all stakeholders involved," said Fire Chief Warren Cummings. "This grant allows our fire department to offer programs targeted for our community and we are extremely grateful for the generous donation."

"We are honored to present the Fairbanks Fire Department with this donation, so they may continue to offer the community a high level of service," said Andrew Torrance, CEO of Fireman's Fund Insurance Company. "We expect the education and installation of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to increase the level of safety in the Fairbanks community."

Funded by Fireman's Fund Insurance Company, this grant is part of a nationwide philanthropic program, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. Founded in1863 with a social mission to support the fire service, Fireman's Fund today awards grants to fire service organizations for life-saving equipment, firefighter training and community education programs. Since 2004, Fireman's Fund has awarded grants to more than 2,100 different organizations totaling more than $31 million -- including more than $110,000 in Alaska. Independent insurance agencies and brokers that sell Fireman's Fund products, like Alaska USA Insurance Brokers, are able to direct these grants to support the fire service.

Through this program, Alaska USA Insurance Brokers has directed over $110,000 in grants to fire departments in Alaska.

"We're hopeful this grant will go a long way in helping educate and protect the community from the dangers of smoke and carbon monoxide," said Tim Maudsley of Alaska USA Insurance Brokers. "A simple detector can literally save a life and the plan is to use this money to get detectors in hundreds of homes to ultimately protect thousands of lives."
