Goodwin Procter Expands Securities Litigation & White Collar Defense Group with Addition of Derek Cohen in New York

NEW YORK --(Business Wire)--

Goodwin Procter, a national Am Law 50 firm, announced today that Derek A. Cohen has joined the firm's New York office as a partner in its Securities Litigation & White Collar Defense Group. Cohen joins Goodwin from the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. where he served as Deputy Chief of the Fraud Section for the DOJ's Criminal Division and Deputy Director of the Deepwater Horizon Task Force.

At Goodwin, Cohen will focus on white collar criminal investigations and prosecutions, regulatory inquiries and lawsuits, internal corporate investigations and complex commercial litigation.

In his role on the Deepwater Horizon Task Force, Cohen supervised the criminal investigation and prosecutions in connection with the April 2010 Gulf Coast oil spill disaster that killed eleven men and caused unprecedented environmental damage. His responsibilities included the prosecutions of Transocean, Halliburton and BP, which resulted in the largest criminal resolution in U.S. history. Cohen's work on the Deepwater Horizon investigation recently earned him the Attorney General's Award for Exceptional Service, the highest award in the Department of Justice, as well as the FBI Director's Award for Excellence, one of the FBI's most prestigious honors.

Prior to his tenure at the DOJ, Cohen was an Assistant United States Attorney with the U.S. Attorney's Office in Philadelphia where he led a national undercover investigation into stock manipulation and prosecutions involving a dozen publicly traded companies. Cohen obtained the conviction of the former CEO of National Lampoon and successfuly tried the former general counsel of one of the world's largest semi-conductor companies for insider trading. Before his service at the DOJ, Cohen was a white collar criminal defense attorney in private practice. He began his career at the Manhattan District Attorney's office, serving as an Assistant DA under Robert Morgenthau.

"Derek's extensive experience and accomplishments are a welcome addition to our already deep talent pool of white collar attorneys," said Richard M. Strassberg, chair of Goodwin's White Collar Crime & Government Investigations group. "His insight as an experienced prosecutor will provide immediate benefits to individuals and corporations facing complex and high-stakes government investigations and prosecutions."

Cohen received his J.D., cum laude, from Boston University School of Law and his B.A. from University at Albany, State University of New York. He is admitted to practice in New York, New Jersey and the District of Columbia, as well as before the U.S. District Court for the Southern, Eastern and Western Districts of New York.

Cohen can be reached at (212) 459-7060 or [email protected].

The firm's White Collar Crime & Government Investigations Practice has successfully represented Fortune 500 companies and individual business leaders in some of the United States' most high-profile cases.
