Barrett Xplore Selects Tellabs to Power 4G Offerings

NAPERVILLE, Ill., Jan. 12, 2011 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Barrett Xplore Inc. will use Tellabs to power Barrett's national 4G wireless broadband network. By the end of 2012, Barrett Xplore will be able to deliver affordable, reliable wireless broadband to every rural Canadian. To ensure subscribers have high quality of service, Barrett Xplore selected the Tellabs(R) SmartCore(R) 9160 platform to intelligently manage IP traffic and capacity as demand for services grows.

Barrett will launch the country's first national 4G network, through a combination of terrestrial wireless and satellite networks. Marketed under the Xplornet brand, the terrestrial 4G wireless network will initially be based on WiMAX and will be software-upgradable to LTE.

Tellabs' technology will act as the controlling intelligence in the network, linking Xplornet customers to the Internet by authenticating each individual user and assigning network resources according to the customer's selected package. The Tellabs platform provides advanced analytics and monetization tools to enable Barrett to maximize its investment, and a flexible, open network architecture to support future growth. Tellabs is also providing network design and integration services to help Barrett prepare for the network launch.

"Xplornet is a digital lifeline for rural Canadians who want fast, reliable, and affordable broadband to connect them to various applications for business and personal uses," said Jeff Burlock, Sr. VP of Strategic Technology at Barrett Xplore. "We confidently selected Tellabs because the enhanced service and traffic management capabilities of Tellabs(R) SmartCore(R) 9100 platform will help us realize the goal of an urban-quality broadband experience for rural Canadians, and will position us for seamless movement to LTE in the future."
