Hampton Roads Sanitation District Chooses Envista for Map-Based Project Coordination

BEVERLY, MA, Dec 31, 2010 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- Envista Corporation, the world's leading provider of map-based coordination for smarter, safer streets, today announced that Hampton Roads Sanitation District (HRSD), a regional wastewater treatment utility in southeast Virginia, has selected Envista Smarter Streets to enhance communication with local jurisdictions and save money by proactively identifying and avoiding costly project conflicts.

HRSD maintains more than 500 miles of large diameter pipelines that stretch through 17 counties and cities. Traditionally, the utility met quarterly with each jurisdiction to share information and coordinate upcoming projects, primarily through the use of spreadsheets. Project managers would then update the jurisdictions with any changes in the project schedules. Requests for information required compiling data from multiple sources, often resulting in delays. With Envista Smarter Streets, HRSD is able to streamline the coordination process and improve responsiveness dramatically.

Nancy L. Munnikhuysen, HRSD Chief of Communications, said, "Coordinating capital projects and information requests with multiple jurisdictions is often difficult and time consuming. During HRSD's capital planning process, Envista will be a valuable tool used to coordinate our upcoming projects with those of the local jurisdictions. Aligning our project schedules with those of the jurisdictions will save time and money, which ultimately benefits ratepayers." One of the most valuable benefits of Envista is its ability to help HRSD identify and avoid conflicts, recently demonstrated as the City of Norfolk launched a large repaving effort in the midst of an extensive underground infrastructure condition assessment being conducted by HRSD.

Bruce W. Husselbee, P.E., HRSD Director of Engineering, explained, "Envista is going to allow HRSD to recognize where our condition assessment work is in conflict with the City's paving work, and coordinate efforts to resolve any conflicts. In the past, this coordination would have involved creating multiple GIS overlays and manually looking for areas of conflict. In the worst case scenario, a conflict might be overlooked, resulting in a street cut and re-paving. Envista will allow us to recognize, coordinate, and resolve these conflicts almost instantly, avoiding unnecessary street disruption and the possibility of considerable paving costs." By enhancing communication with local jurisdictions and enabling real-time project coordination, Envista is helping HRSD save time, respond more quickly to information requests, and reduce costs through improved planning.
